written by Wendy October 09, 2007 This story is very sad. People can be charged for mistreating humans and animal's, yet our own "animal control" officers were going to sit and watch that poor puppy die. How is that not inhumane? They should all be fired. Get animal control officers in there that care and will do there jobs. I am a pet owner and to me this is a complete outrage. Will anything be done about this? We as a county need to make sure it does.
written by Major Dog Lover, October 09, 2007 The person who blew the whistle on this needs to go to the Board of Supervisors and tell what they found. The Animal Control Officers need to be punished for this and the Supervisor of Animal Control should be let go. Does the Sheriff know about this?? He should because most animal control fall under the Sheriffs Dept. All the AC Officers should loose their jobs and be charged along with the original owner who let the puppy suffer in the first place. There are laws against mis treatment of animals and charges should be issued against all involved.
written by Jeanie, October 09, 2007 I find this appalling to even think about how this little puppy suffered! I think the animal control people should lose their jobs and get some people in there who will properly care for these little innocent pets. They are soooooo precious and I think that we should have tougher laws everywhere when people mistreat "ANY ANIMALS." To many people get off mistreating these precious pets!!!! We need to have people who will speak up as you did. I am proud of what you did. We need more people like you.
written by one4h2, October 11, 2007 I am glad that this issue was addressed and I truely hope that something will come of this. I just wish we were able to know what type of disciplinary action would be done. If the public could see that maybe everyone would think twice before being cruel to an animal again.
written by Major Dog Lover, October 11, 2007 I feel that the County has just responded to this so people will let it rest. Where was the person who oversees the daily operations of the shelter?? Why wasn't that person there to give the shelters part of the issue?? This is another Wythe Co. way to try to make something go away. I don't feel it will go punished because it being covered up again. Hopefully someone will find out what happened to the people responsible for this. But I doubt it. I sure wish the news media would cover this so the embarrassment would come out. Well enough about what wont happen. How is the dog?? Thats who pays the price for this negligence. Just my opinion.
written by Itstartsatthetop, October 12, 2007 I want to commend John and his wife for working so long and so hard to help these animals. The shelter is one of the worst shelters in the state - it is out of date, small, constantly smelly, unhealthy, and not maintained. How can we expect anyone that works or volunteers in such a place to have any respect for anything. This goes way up the chain to those in charge of the county - is there a board of supervisors? Have they been to THEIR shelter? How would they like working day in and day out in this facility. The animals obviously are suffering. This was one of the LAST (if not the last) holdouts to using gas in our STATE. Do the leaders in this county SEE how others SEE THEM? It's inexcusable. I would pursue legal action against the county for allowing treatment and conditions such as this in the state. Is this shelter meeting state code ? (if it is then that's a problem as well - how could it be). There USED to be a fine of 1200. a day for EACH violation by the state --- is this still in effect? I hope the article will make citizens that live in this county realize what is going on IN THEIR COUNTY and be ashamed, embarrassed, and horrified.
Marks Opinion: When the rescuers are as heartless as the owners, where do we go next?
Comments from Craig Co. We, as a group of passionate animal lovers can change this situation. It will continue to happen if we allow it to. Speak up..write to those with power..press formal charges if need be.. Don't EVER allow anyone to abuse an animal. Somewhere there was a famous quote that went something like "if you are not part of the solution than you are part of the problem" Always be part of the solution.

Comments from Pulaski = I posted your link on My space bulletin, so it goes out to a lot of people. I have a black lab and he is my buddy. This has wrong all over it.....
Comments from Floyd = John, First thanks for saving this dog. I would refer you to Nathan Winograd's blog and book about the current state of "sheltering" in this country. http://nathanwinograd.blogspot.com/ His book is Redemption, The myth of pet overpopulation. It is a must read for all in the world of companion animal rescue. I too have a wonderful big black dog who came from the Wytheville pound and A/C did not want to let me adopt him since I'm not in an adjoining county. Fortunately I went thru the Wythe Humane Society.
comments = I have adopted two animals from the shelter.A boxer mix and a pointer mix. They are my babies! I couldn't imagine life without them. I currently have 5 dogs total, the two adopted and 3 strays that were dropped in my yard. Even though I really can't adopt anymore at this time, I always check your website to see if there is a dog available that someone else I know may be interested in. Shame on the animal shelter if they do not let you in to take pictures anymore because of the incident with spirit. The goal is to help the animals find a home. It's a shame that they have lost sight of that. The shelter is sending me the pictures now, thanks Holly-John

Comments from Wynne, AR = Thank you for fighting for proper care of shelter animals. It took years of dogged determination, but we (Forrest City Area Humane Society) finally forced the city to build a decent shelter and hire staff who care. If it can happen here, it can happen anywhere. Please let me know if I can help. The courageous Wythe Humane Society volunteers are in our thoughts and prayers.
